About Birdie Golf Pro
I’m John Bielawski and I love the game of golf.
I grew up in a middle-class neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. As a young kid in the 60’s, we were brought up watching and playing baseball – we even had a buddy that went on to play in the Bigs.
Even though we played a lot of baseball, we were not blind to noticing players in other sports; with the likes of Dick Butkus, Bobby Hull, Gayle Sayers, to name a few. But we also heard of guys like Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Chi-Chi Rodriguez who played golf.
Not knowing much about the game as a kid, we assumed it was a rich man’s sport. On top of it, I’m a lefty – so if we found a club laying around, it was always right-handed. Needless to say, we focused on other sports for the time being.
Aside from miniature golf, I didn’t play my first official round of golf until I was 22 years old and I shot 111 with a set of rental clubs. Up to that point, I’d only been to the driving range one time. Beginners luck?
I was hooked instantly and I wanted to golf all the time. I quickly discovered how therapeutic golf could be. It can bring out the best in you and the worst in you. All you have to do is hit the little white ball into the hole… right?
At the age of 27, I bought my first set of clubs for $100 – used, of course. I got a lot of use out of those sticks. I have bought 4 more sets of clubs over the next 40 years, along with some additional drivers and putters.
Though I was never truly great at the sport, I’ve always loved to play. I find the golf course comforting to the mind and soul. It’s exciting to crush that big drive, sink that 30ft put for a birdie, or even shoot 17 under with your buddies to win the company golf tournament scramble.
As I’ve aged (like a fine wine, of course), I noticed I can’t hit the ball quite as hard as I used to – but I’m still very passionate about the game. While I can still play, I wanted to invest some of my free time helping others with their golf game which is why I started Birdie Golf Pro. I’m here to help people find the right equipment to get started with or continue, their golf journey. I’m hoping my reporting and product reviews will help you get the best experience possible from your game.
Thanks for joining me on my quest and maybe I’ll see you on the course someday.
